Summer time is Capitol Reef’s busiest and hottest season, but temperatures rarely reach over 100 degrees. Since many people have most of their time and are not at school, this is the most popular time of the year to visit the Capitol reef, but it may be the miserable temperature. There are fewer people on the paths, but other meeting places can be overcrowded.

In autumn, the bicycle and hiking trails fill up as a drop in temperature. People also come to the park to visit Fruita’s orchard. At this time the peaches, plums and pears are ready for harvesting. The evenings and nights can be very cool during this time and camper/hikers have to be prepared with jackets and warm blankets.

In spring, the weather can be unexpectedly cool and the amount is thin. However, hiking and cycling are very popular this season. The flora and fauna of the park are also in a top flower and can lead to a very unique experience.

Winter is cold, but absolutely beautiful. It snaps snow in the Capitol reef so that visitors can see snow -covered rock formations and the contrast of the red rock with the snow is fantastic. Whether you believe it or not, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing are possible in the Capitol Reef!

We visited in May 2021 and absolutely loved every second. The weather was perfect and while we saw other people on paths, we were never overcrowded. The temperatures were in the 40s at night and up to the high 60s or low 70s during the day. (Fahrenheit) It was fantastic.
